Fit for a Queen: Where to raise a glass of English wine this Jubilee weekend

The long weekend is almost upon us, and Sussex’s vineyards are ready and waiting to welcome you with corks-a-popping.

Whether you’re looking for afternoon tea for two, sundowners overlooking the South Downs, lunch by the river or wood-fired pizzas and natural wines, you’ll find it all in Sussex.

Here’s where to raise a glass of Sussex wine fit for a Queen this Jubilee weekend.

Jubilee picnic tours at Bolney

Just up the road from Brighton, the beautiful Bolney Estate is going all out for the platinum weekend, with special Jubilee tours, picnics and Best of Bolney celebration cases. You can also join a cheese and wine tasting tour on Sunday, enjoy a picnic amongst the vines, or make the most of the bank holiday with sundowners and nibbles on Bolney’s viewing balcony until 9pm. Find out more at Bolney’s website.

Afternoon Tea at Albourne Estate

Tea for two? Don’t mind if we do. A quintessentially English Jubilee experience awaits at Albourne Estate this weekend, with a special home-made afternoon tea for two. Coronation chicken and cream cheese sandwiches, freshly-baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam and generous slices of Lemon Drizzle cake and Chocolate Brownie, accompanied by a glass of Albourne sparkling wine and glorious views from the Tasting Room balcony. Tea time is 2pm on 3rd and 4th of June, and you can book via the website.

Wood-fired pizza and wines at Tillingham

Nestled in a hidden corner of the Sussex Weald, Tillingham estate is welcoming visitors to its newly refurbished Dutch Barn this weekend for wood-fired pizza and natural wines amongst the estate’s vineyards, fruit trees, ancient woodland and livestock.

Tours and riverside lunch at Stopham

Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the South Downs, Stopham Estate offer vineyard, winery and wine tasting tours with the winemaker on Saturdays at 11am or 2pm. Add a leisurely lunch by the river for the full experience (it is a bank holiday, after all) and let the good times roll.
